Magical Mecklenburg Tour thru Warnemünde & Schwerin

  Magical Mecklenburg Tour
Warnemünde & Schwerin, Germany

Friends of Dave Tours are total experiences that combine the beauty and history of each visited town with Dave's own favorite touring spots and methods.  Every adventure is a "strolling tour" through charming streets, historical sites, and picturesque spots.  Although these are walking tours, they are paced to allow for casual enjoyment, have many stops for food & drink, restrooms breaks, and the chance to take in the scenery.  While the tours are not strenuous, you should be able to walk for 20 to 30 minutes per segment at a casual pace.  Dave is fat, broke his back twice, and has a new hip.. if he can do it... most people can do it.

The full day/ 12 hour tour cost of 140€ is ALL INCLUSIVE and includes: full guided tours in each city, morning coffee & cake stop OR afternoon cafe visit, transportation on Deutsche Bahn trains, a fantastic a la Carte lunch with 1 beverage in a local restaurant, all admissions, AND the 19% German sales tax (tour 113€ + sales tax 27€ = 140€).

Warnemünde
A Seaside Gem

When your ship calls in beautiful Warnemünde there is a virtual treasure chest of possible tour experiences to choose from... not just Berlin!Situated at the mouth of the Warnow River, this sleepy fishing village has been a thriving beach resort since the 1800s and with good reason! It has lovely beaches, charming architecture which gives a glimpse into it's fragmented past, quaint shops to search for souvenirs in, as well as fantastic restaurants and cafes to sample Bismark herring and Rostock pils beer: compared to your other Baltic stops it is also a culinary bargain!

Historically, Warnemünde has played a much greater role in the Baltic's development than its size would suggest.  Danish dukes, Swedish kings, French generals and German princes & merchants have vied for control of this small area of land at the entrance to the Baltic since long before Rostock bought it from the House of Mecklenburg in 1323.

Our tour begins at the new Warnemünde Cruise Terminal where you will be met by your guide for the day.  From there we'll head along the river and under the train station into the charming heart of Warnemünde and see & hear first hand how this town developed from a Medieval possession of Rostock and river toll collecting/ fishing village into one of the Baltic's premier seaside-bathing resorts.

Strolling past the Alte Strom Harbour and the anchored fishing boats, we'll discuss the architectural histories, legends and myths, as well as interesting information about the town's current status as a "Must Have Seaside Address."  Along the way we'll explore sites like the Edward Munch House, Meyers Windmill, the Lighthouse/Teepot, the seaside promenade, the cathedral, Alte Strom harbour and many more. At the end of the walk we'll stop at the Strom Cafe for some fortification for the next leg of our journey! Good German cake and coffee (or maybe a beer for the hearty) will be waiting!

* Our walking tours are more like "strolling" tours. They are not strenuous and there are many stops and breaks throughout the day. Compare it to spending a day shopping with friends - stopping at Starbucks and/or lunch, etc.  The areas of Meck-Pomm are known for their cobblestone streets so good walking shoes are essential.  All Agendas are subject to slight variations based on weather, ship arrival times, and availability.
Schwerin
A Fairytale City

The former seat of the Dukes of Mecklenburg, Schwerin boasts one of Germany's most beautiful castles, abundant natural beauty surrounding picturesque lakes, and a rich history reaching back over a thousand years. It is known as "Stadt am Wasser" or City on the Water.

Currently the seat of parliament for the state of Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Schwerin has a small, but quaint city center with typical half timbered houses, a Gothic style cathedral, and beautiful castle gardens which were the host to Germany's 2009 BUGA (National Garden Show).

Our Schwerin tour is  the cherry on the pie after seeing Warnemünde. Our tour description is based on the Warnemünde connection.

Upon arrival in Schwerin by train, we will stroll into the downtown shopping area for a 90 minute walking tour followed by a delicious German lunch where you can sample a cold local beer.

Afterwards we'll head to Schwerin Castle (often called the Neuschwanstein of the North) and explore the stately rooms; keeping our eyes open for the castle's ghost, Petermännchen, who rewards those who are honest and good and punishes thieves and vagabonds.

Outside the beautiful castle gardens await. We will tour the castle garden section with peaks into the grotto, castle chapel, and orangerie. There are fantastic photo opportunities (or for those who would like some relaxation) a nice place to sit and take in the scenery.

The German National Garden Show was set in Schwerin in 2009 and as a result the gardens and park situated all around the water now provide numerous places to sit and enjoy, not only views of the impressive castle, but the chance to observe first hand the effects of historical garden construction and design from the 18th century to the present day.  As the BUGA was huge, and set over a very large area, we will enjoy the section located at the castle itself which is still being maintained even though BUGA has ended.

From here we will walk into town along the shopping mile where you can purchase an ice cream or souvenir before heading back to Warnemünde.
