Mini Hansa Tour thru Warnemünde & Rostock

The Mini Hansa Tour*
Warnemünde & Rostock, Germany

Friends of Dave Tours are total experiences that combine the beauty and history of each visited town with Dave's own favorite touring spots and methods.  Every adventure is a "strolling tour" through charming streets, historical sites, and picturesque spots.  Although these are walking tours, they are paced to allow for casual enjoyment, have many stops for food & drink, restrooms breaks, and the chance to take in the scenery.  While the tours are not strenuous, you should be able to walk for 20 to 30 minutes per segment at a casual pace.

* The Mini Hansa Tour is only recommended for ships in port less than 10 hours.  It could also happen that this tour is conducted by another guide rather than Dave.

The full day/10 hour tour cost of 125€ is ALL INCLUSIVE and includes: full guided tours in each city, morning coffee & cake stop OR afternoon cafe visit, transportation on river boat to Rostock and back on Deutsche Bahn trains, a fantastic lunch with 1 beverage in a local restaurant, any admissions, and the 19% German sales tax (tour 102€ + tax 23€ = 125).

Warnemünde
A Seaside Gem

When your ship calls in beautiful Warnemünde there is a virtual treasure chest of possible tour experiences to choose from... not just Berlin! Situated at the mouth of the Warnow River, this sleepy fishing village has been a thriving beach resort since the 1800s and with good reason. It has lovely beaches, charming architecture which gives a glimpse into it's fragmented past, quaint shops to search for souvenirs in, as well as fantastic restaurants and cafes to sample Bismark herring and Rostock pils beer: compared to your other Baltic stops it is also a culinary bargain.

Historically, Warnemünde has played a much greater role in the Baltic's development than its size would suggest.  Danish dukes, Swedish kings, French generals and German princes & merchants have vied for control of this small area of land at the entrance to the Baltic since long before Rostock bought it from the House of Mecklenburg in 1323.

Our tour begins at the new Warnemünde Cruise Terminal where you will be met by Dave.  From there we'll head along the river and under the train station into the charming heart of Warnemünde and see & hear first hand how this town developed from a Medieval possession of Rostock and river toll collecting/ fishing village into one of the Baltic's premier seaside-bathing resorts.

Strolling past the Alte Strom Harbour and the anchored fishing boats, we'll discuss the architectural histories, legends and myths, as well as interesting information about the town's current status as a "Must Have Seaside Address."  Along the way there're various sites to explore like the Edward Munch House, Meyers Windmill, the Lighthouse/Teepot, the seaside promenade, the cathedral, Alte Strom harbour and much more.

At the end of the walk we'll stop for lunch for some fortification for the next leg of our journey! A full German lunch with a large beverage are included.

* Our walking tours are more like "strolling" tours. They are not strenuous and there are many stops and breaks throughout the day. Compare it to spending a day shopping with friends - stopping at Starbucks and/or lunch, etc.  The areas of Meck-Pomm are known for their cobblestone streets so good walking shoes are essential.  All Agendas are subject to slight variations based on weather, ship arrival times, and availability.
Rostock
A Sleeping Beauty

Rostock has so much more to it than first glimpses will show. In places it is a bit ragged and worn... as if asleep for a long time like Sleeping Beauty. But then, with just the right approach she awakens and shows you her smile. The site of Northern Germany's medieval and industrial hey day, Rostock has risen and fallen and risen several times, but always her riches and successes have laid with the sea.

The most bombed and ravaged city in the first part of WWII, much of Rostock was destroyed, and then marred further by the Communists' architectural attempts, but she is on her way back and there is a lot more to see and do than many people think. Impressive medieval townhouses, Baroque facades, and the ever present Baltic Bricks, there are interesting buildings galore.

Our Rostock Tour is combined with a morning tour of Warnemünde and after lunch it's off to the city.

Our Rostock tour portion begins with a boat journey up the River Warnow from Warnemünde.  On this 45 minute journey we will share a short history of Rostock and its importance thru the ages.  Upon arrival we'll head to the University Church, formerly the Holy Cross Convent. We'll explore the Museum for Culture & History where along with an impressive collection of medieval craftsmanship, seasonal exhibits give an insightful look into the city's turbulent past.

Continuing on to the Universityplatz and the streets along Kröpeliner will give you a chance to see the "Porno Fountain" and the surviving parts of Rostock's architectural history with insight into the every day lives of Rostock's residents.

We'll then make our way to beautiful St. Mary's Church and the New Market Square to see the oldest functioning Astronomical clock. At the end of the tour you'll have the choice to accompany Dave back to Warnemünde or to stay in the city and shop a little.
